The three big ideas

  • A family is the group of people we live with and love. Some families are small and some are big.
  • Family members do different things — some go to work, some cook, some study, and grandparents share stories and wisdom.
  • In a family we help each other: an older child can help a younger one, and everyone shares the housework.

Everyday example. Meera’s grandmother cannot reach the top shelf. What is the kind thing Meera can do?

Meera can fetch the things from the shelf for her grandmother. Helping at home is one way families care for each other.

  • Neighbours live near us. Friendly neighbours say hello, share festival sweets and help in times of need.
  • Community helpers do special jobs — a teacher teaches, a doctor heals, a sweeper keeps roads clean, a postman brings letters.
  • Every helper is important. We should be polite to them and remember to say thank you.
Common mix-up: Mix-up: no job is small or unimportant. The person who keeps our street clean helps us stay healthy just as much as a doctor does.
  • Simple rules — waiting your turn, not littering, speaking gently — keep everyone safe and happy.
  • Sharing and caring means giving a turn, helping a friend who is hurt, and including everyone in a game.
  • We live with people of many languages, foods and festivals. We respect differences and learn from them.

Everyday example. A new boy in class is sitting alone and looks shy. What can you do?

You can smile, say hello and ask him to join your game. Welcoming others is how a happy community grows.

Where you'll see it

Living together every day

Welcoming a new neighbour

When a new family moves in next door, a warm hello and a little help with directions makes them feel at home.

Rules at school

Standing in a line for lunch and putting waste in the bin are small rules that make the whole school run smoothly.

Thanking our helpers

A simple thank you to the bus driver or the sweeper shows we notice and value the work they do for us.
