The three big ideas

  • We wash our hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet to wash away germs.
  • Brushing teeth twice a day, bathing and wearing clean clothes keep our body fresh and healthy.
  • Keeping our home and surroundings clean — no litter, no still dirty water — stops germs and mosquitoes.

Everyday example. You have just come home from the playground. What should you do before your snack?

Wash your hands well with soap. This removes germs so they do not get into your food.

  • Exercise and play — running, skipping, cycling, games — make us strong and put us in a good mood.
  • Our body also needs rest and sleep. Children need plenty of sleep at night to grow and feel fresh.
  • A good day has a balance of play, study and rest — too much of any one is not good.
Common mix-up: Mix-up: sitting still and watching a screen all day is not the same as rest. Real rest and good sleep refresh the body in a way screens do not.
  • We stay safe by following road rules, keeping away from fire and sharp objects, and never going off with strangers.
  • If something feels wrong or we are hurt, we should tell a trusted grown-up at once.
  • It is normal to feel happy, sad, angry or scared. Talking about feelings to family or a teacher helps us feel better.

Everyday example. A stranger offers you a sweet and asks you to come with him. What should you do?

Say no, do not go with him, and tell a trusted grown-up right away. Staying safe comes first.
