The three big ideas

  • Mountains are high and cold; deserts are hot and dry; coasts lie beside the sea.
  • Plains are flat and good for farming; forests are thick with trees and animals.
  • Each kind of land has its own weather, plants and animals, which shapes how people there live.

Everyday example. One place is very cold with snow, another is very hot with sand. Which is the mountain and which is the desert?

The cold, snowy place is the mountain; the hot, sandy place is the desert.

  • Homes suit the land: sloping roofs in snowy mountains, thick walls in hot deserts.
  • Clothes suit the weather: warm woollens in the cold mountains, loose cotton in the hot desert.
  • Food uses what grows nearby: more fish on the coast, more grains and vegetables in the plains.
Common mix-up: Mix-up: people do not live the same way everywhere. What is best in the mountains may not suit the desert — life fits the place.
  • People do different work: fishing on the coast, farming in the plains, herding in the mountains.
  • They use suitable travel and animals — camels in the desert, boats on the coast.
  • Changing the way we live to suit our surroundings is called adapting, and people are very good at it.

Everyday example. Why might a family near the sea eat a lot of fish?

Because fish is easily caught from the sea nearby, so it is a common and fresh food there.

Where you'll see it

How place shapes life

A home in the hills

Houses in snowy mountains have sloping roofs so the snow slides off instead of piling up and breaking the roof.

A traveller in the desert

In the sandy, hot desert, loose cotton clothes and a camel to ride help people travel and stay cool.

A fishing village

By the sea, families set out in boats to catch fish — the sea gives them both food and work.
