Three big ideas

  • Some children live in a small family — parents and one or two children.
  • Some live in a big family — with grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins all in one home.
  • Every family is special. The members love and look after one another, whether the family is big or small.

Think about it. Who are the members of your family at home?

You might name your amma, appa, a brother or sister, and maybe a dadi or nana. Each one has a special place in your family.

  • In a family, everyone shares the work — cooking, cleaning, watering plants and looking after little ones.
  • Children can help too — putting away toys, setting the table, or feeding a pet.
  • We respect our elders and help anyone who is unwell. Helping is a way of saying “I love you”.
Remember: Work is not only for grown-ups. When children help with small jobs, the whole family is happier.
  • Friends are people we play and share with. We make friends at school, in the park and next door.
  • A good friend is kind — they share, take turns, and help when you are hurt or sad.
  • Friends sometimes argue. Saying sorry and forgiving each other keeps friendships strong.

Think about it. Your friend is feeling sad because they lost a pencil. What can you do?

You could share one of your pencils, sit with them, and help them look. That is what a caring friend does.

Where you'll see it

Family and friends every day

At home

Setting the table or watering a plant is your way of helping the family. Many small hands make the work light.

On a festival day

Relatives come over, everyone cooks and cleans together, and the house fills with laughter. That is family teamwork.

In the playground

Taking turns on the swing and sharing your snack is how good friendships grow, one kind act at a time.
