Three big ideas

  • Festivals are special days when people come together to be happy and thankful.
  • Some festivals welcome a new season or a good harvest; some are days of prayer; some mark a new year.
  • India has many festivals because many different people live here — and everyone enjoys each other’s celebrations.

Think. Which festival does your family enjoy the most, and why?

You might love the lights, the special food, meeting cousins, or new clothes. Every family has its favourite reasons.

  • We get ready by cleaning the house, cooking special food and making decorations.
  • People wear new or best clothes, light lamps or play with colours, sing, dance and pray.
  • Different festivals have different customs, but almost all include good food and good company.
Celebrate kindly: Festivals are happiest when we are gentle — say no to loud, scary crackers near babies and animals, and avoid wasting water or food.
  • A big part of every festival is sharing — sweets, greetings and good wishes with family and neighbours.
  • We respect festivals that are not our own and join our friends in their joy.
  • Kind families also help others — sharing food and clothes with those who have less, so everyone can celebrate.

Think. A new neighbour is celebrating a festival you do not know. What can you do?

You can wish them happily, accept a sweet with a smile, and learn about their festival. That is how we share joy.

Sweets for everyone

On festival days, families exchange boxes of sweets with neighbours — a tasty way of saying “we are friends”.

A clean, bright home

Cleaning and decorating before a festival makes the house feel new and welcoming for guests.

Caring for animals

Choosing quiet celebrations keeps street dogs, birds and little babies calm during festival days.
