The three big ideas

  • Adding puts groups together to find how many in all.
  • Add the ones first, then the tens.
  • If the ones make ten or more, make a ten and carry it to the tens place.

Let's try. 25 + 13.

Ones: 5 + 3 = 8. Tens: 2 + 1 = 3. So 25 + 13 = 38.

  • Subtracting means taking some away to find how many are left.
  • Take away the ones, then the tens.
  • If there are not enough ones, break a ten into ten ones first.

Let's try. 47 − 23.

Ones: 7 − 3 = 4. Tens: 4 − 2 = 2. So 47 − 23 = 24.

  • In a story sum, read carefully: "in all" or "together" means add; "left" or "how many more" means subtract.
  • Adding and subtracting are opposites — one undoes the other.
  • You can check a subtraction by adding the answer back.

Let's try. Rani had 34 stickers and gave 12 away. How many left?

34 − 12 = 22 stickers. Check: 22 + 12 = 34. Correct!

Watch out: always add ones with ones and tens with tens. Do not add a ones digit to a tens digit.
