The three big ideas

  • A pattern is a small part that repeats again and again.
  • Find the unit (the part that repeats) and you can tell what comes next.
  • Garlands, rangoli and string lights all use patterns.

Let's try. What comes next: 🔴🟡🔴🟡🔴 ___ ?

The unit is 🔴🟡. After 🔴 comes 🟡.

  • Skip counting means jumping by the same number each time.
  • By 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. By 5: 5, 10, 15, 20. By 10: 10, 20, 30, 40.
  • Skip counting helps you count many things quickly.

Let's try. Count 4 packets of 5 sweets by fives.

5, 10, 15, 20 — there are 20 sweets in all.

  • When groups all have the same number, we have equal groups.
  • To find the total, add the same number again and again: 3 groups of 4 is 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
  • This is the start of multiplication — adding equal groups.

Let's try. 2 trees with 6 lamps each — how many lamps?

6 + 6 = 12 lamps.

Watch out: repeated addition only works when the groups are equal. If groups are different sizes, add the real numbers.

String lights

Festival lights blink in a pattern — red, yellow, green — the same unit again and again.

Boxes of sweets

If every box has the same number of laddoos, skip counting tells you the total fast.

Rangoli rows

Equal rows of dots make a neat rangoli — add the rows to count all the dots.
