Three steps to read a picture

  • First, look slowly all over the picture — the middle, the corners, the top and the bottom.
  • Notice the colours, the people or animals, and what they are doing.
  • Imagine a picture of a park: children play, a dog runs, a man sells balloons, birds sit on a tree.
  • Who is in the picture? — two children and a dog.
  • What are they doing? — playing with a ball.
  • Where are they? — in a green park.

Try it.

Look at any picture and answer three questions: who, what, where. Now you know its little story!

  • Join your answers into one sentence: “Two children are playing with a ball in the park.”
  • Begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
  • Add a describing word to make it nicer: “Two happy children are playing with a red ball.”
Remember: every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop (.)

Signs and posters

A poster of a fair shows you what is there — rides, food, games — before you read a single word.

Telling your day

Looking at a photo, you can tell who is in it, what they did and where they went.
