Three gentle ideas

  • Opposites are words that mean the very opposite thing: come – go, up – down, near – far, big – small.
  • Knowing opposites helps you say exactly what you mean.

Say the opposite.

I say come, you say go. I say fast, you say slow. I say day, you say night.

  • Feeling words tell how we feel: happy, sad, excited, scared, proud.
  • When a friend goes far away, we may feel sad and miss them; when they come back, we feel happy.
  • When someone leaves we say “Goodbye, see you soon!”
  • When they return we say “Welcome back! I missed you.”
Kind tip: a warm goodbye and a happy welcome make people feel loved.

Where you'll meet it

Coming and going every day

Waving goodbye

Each morning you say bye to family and go to school; in the evening you come back home.

Missing someone

When grandparents visit and then leave, you may miss them and wish, “Come back soon!”

Welcoming friends

When a friend arrives, a big smile and “Welcome!” makes a lovely start.
