Three sky ideas

  • Imagination is making pictures in your head. A white cloud can become a rabbit, a ship, a mountain of ice cream!
  • Poets use imagination to make ordinary things magical.
  • We compare with looks like or as ... as: “That cloud looks like a sheep.” “It is as white as cotton.”
  • Comparing helps the reader picture it at once.

Make a comparison.

Look at a cloud and finish: “It looks like a ___.” Maybe a boat, a bird or a big pillow.

  • Describing words tell what kind: a fluffy cloud, a grey sky, a soft breeze.
  • Two describing words can paint a clearer picture: “big, white clouds floated by.”
Tip: a comparison uses like or as. “The cloud is white” describes; “The cloud is as white as cotton” compares.
