Three shape ideas

  • Round things like balls and oranges roll when you push them.
  • Things with flat faces like boxes and books slide and stay still.
  • A can or a pipe is round on its side, so it rolls — but it can stand up flat too.

Let us try. You roll an orange and a book down a gentle slope. Which one rolls?

The orange is round, so it rolls. The book is flat, so it slides.

  • A box has flat faces you can rest your hand on.
  • A ball has a round, curved surface all over — no flat part.
  • Flat faces help things stack into towers; round sides help things roll away.
  • Long things are much longer than they are wide — a pencil, a straw, a pipe.
  • Flat things are thin, like a coin or a leaf.
  • Round things are like a ball or a marble. We can sort our toys into these groups.
Remember: the same object can be round AND long, like a pencil or a pipe. Look carefully at every side!

Where you'll use it

Shapes all around us

Building blocks

Flat blocks stack into tall towers; round balls keep rolling away. Knowing shapes helps you build something that does not fall.

Wheels that roll

Cars, cycles and carts have round wheels so they roll smoothly. Square wheels would only bump and stop!

Packing a bag

Flat books lie neatly side by side, while round fruit rolls about. We pack flat things flat and round things in corners.
