Three adding ideas

  • Adding means putting two groups together to make one bigger group.
  • We write it with the + sign and find the total, called the sum.
  • 3 tomatoes and 2 tomatoes put together make 5 tomatoes.

Let us try. One row has 4 brinjals, another has 3. How many in all?

Put them together: 4 + 3 = 7 brinjals.

  • The + sign tells us to add. We read 4 + 3 as "four plus three".
  • To count on, start at the bigger number and count up the smaller one.
  • For 6 + 2: start at 6, then say 7, 8. The answer is 8.
  • You can add in any order: 2 + 5 is the same as 5 + 2.
  • Both make 7, so it is smart to start with the bigger number and count on.
  • Adding stories often say "more", "altogether" or "in all".
Remember: adding always makes the group bigger (or the same if you add 0). It never gets smaller.
