Three pattern ideas

  • A pattern is a part that repeats again and again by a rule.
  • Colours, shapes, claps and sounds can all make patterns.
  • A festival garland of red-yellow-red-yellow is a colour pattern.

Let us try. Look at 🟢🔵🟢🔵🟢🔵. What part repeats?

The repeating part is green then blue, over and over.

  • First find the repeating part — the pattern unit.
  • Then say it again to know what comes next.
  • In ⭐🌙⭐🌙⭐, the unit is star-moon, so after the last star comes a moon.
  • Pick a small unit, like big-small or clap-stamp.
  • Repeat it again and again to make your own pattern.
  • You can use beads, leaves, claps or colours — anything that repeats!
Remember: a pattern must repeat by a rule. Random colours with no rule are not a pattern.

Patterns at the festival

Rangoli designs

Rangoli borders repeat shapes and colours. Spotting the unit helps you copy the design all the way around.

Music and clapping

Songs have beats that repeat. Clap-clap-stamp again and again is a sound pattern you can keep going.

Beads and bangles

Threading beads in a repeating colour order makes a pretty pattern — and helps you count too.
