Three counting ideas

  • We count in order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
  • Touch each thing once and say one number — do not skip or count twice.
  • The last number you say tells how many there are.

Let us try. Count these mangoes: 🥭🥭🥭🥭🥭.

One, two, three, four, five. The last number is 5, so there are 5 mangoes.

  • We can match one cup to one plate, one child to one balloon.
  • If every thing gets a partner with none left over, the two groups are the same.
  • If some are left without a partner, that group has more.
  • More means a bigger number; fewer means a smaller number.
  • 7 mangoes are more than 4 mangoes. 2 mangoes are fewer than 5.
  • Zero (0) means none at all — an empty basket has zero mangoes.
Remember: count slowly and point to each thing. Going too fast makes us skip or count one twice.

Where you'll use it

Counting every day

Sharing snacks

One biscuit for each friend? Count the friends, count the biscuits, and match one for one so nobody is left out.

Setting the table

Five people for dinner means five plates and five spoons. Counting helps you put out just the right number.

Playing games

How many marbles did you win? Count them up. More marbles than your friend means you are ahead!
