Three measuring ideas

  • Long and short tell us length — a snake is long, a worm is short.
  • Tall and short tell us height — a giraffe is tall, a puppy is short.
  • To compare fairly, start both things from the same line.

Let us try. A bus and a cycle stand together. Which is longer?

The bus is much longer than the cycle.

  • A handspan is your open hand; a footstep is one step of your foot.
  • We place the unit again and again and count how many times it fits.
  • A table might be 5 handspans long, a mat 8 footsteps long.
  • A grown-up has bigger feet than a child, so they count fewer footsteps for the same room.
  • To compare two lengths, use the same unit both times.
  • That is why we have rulers — so everyone measures the same way.
Remember: place the unit end to end with no gaps and no overlaps, or your count will be wrong.

Where you'll use it

Measuring all around

How tall are you?

Standing against a wall, a grown-up can mark your height. Each year you can see how much taller you have grown.

Will it fit?

Measuring a shelf in handspans tells you if your new box will fit before you even carry it over.

Who jumped further?

In a jumping game, count footsteps from the start line. More footsteps means a longer jump!
