Three little ideas

  • Characters are the people or animals a story is about — here, a cap-seller and some monkeys.
  • Find them — ask: who is in this story? what do they do?
  • In your own story — a girl and her puppy can be characters too.

Who are the characters? “Riya gave a banana to a little monkey.”

The characters are Riya and the little monkey — they are who the story is about.

  • Beginning — how the story starts. Middle — the busy part where something happens. End — how it finishes.
  • Order words help us: first, then, next, last.
  • Try itFirst the cat saw a fish. Then it jumped. Last it ran away happy.
  • Action words tell what characters DO: climb, throw, copy, run, laugh.
  • Retell — say what happened in order, in your own words.
  • Monkeys love to copy — in stories they often do exactly what they see!
Remember: tell the story in order — what happened first, then next, then last.

Stories everywhere

Listening to stories

When elders tell a tale, notice the characters and what happens first, next and last. It helps you enjoy and remember it.

Telling your own story

You can make up a little story about a pet or a friend. Give it a beginning, a middle and an end.

Acting it out

Stories with action words are fun to act. Climb, throw and copy like the monkeys — and learn the words by doing them.
